Intro to Journalism 12/15

Today we started by taking a current events quiz. Then we moved on to discussing the inverted pyramid style and reading that spread in the Harrower book, (pages 40 and 41). Then I gave a few general notes about newswriting:

  • KISS- Keep It Simple (and/or Short) Stupid: When you write news get to the facts write away. Don’t be overly wordy. Give you reader the facts.
  • Keep your paragraphs short (1-5 sentences) to keep the reader engaged.
  • Make sure your lead is 35 words or less. Readers will be turned away by long leads.
  • Keep your opinion out of news writing. Get opinions from your sources by using direct quotes.
  • Constantly be ready to revise your writing. Always look it over after you get the first draft out there and don’t be afraid to make changes. Also, with news, new information could come in, which would require you to re-write the story. Don’t be afraid, it’s a good thing.

Tomorrow we will start an assignment that allows you to focus on day to day news revisions. I will give you a worksheet with some facts and then you will be expected to draft a news story based on those facts.

Overall I was very pleased with the results from the first test. The scores are available on PowerSchool.
