A brief summary of what happened daily in Mr. Phillips's classes

Intro to journalism 9/21/11

Today we finished watching “Frontline: News War: What’s Happening to the News.” Some key ideas I want you to take away from that special are:

  • Hyperlocalization- news that focuses on a very specific area, tending to ignore the outside world.
  • Newspaper revenues- ads and subscriptions bring in the money. Most newspapers still make money, but not enough to please their corporate owners.
  • Briefly be able to discuss citizen journalism, what is it, who is doing it, why are they doing it?
  • What is happening in newsrooms as businesses try to make up for the money that they’re not making?

Tomorrow I will be gone again, so you will be reading a chapter from the Harrower textbook. Please stay focused for the sub. Chapter four will help you understand the reporting process better as you’re working on your news stories. I’ll be back on Friday, which will be a work day for you in the computer lab.
