Today we began discussing newspaper design. Some of the key terms that I outlined, which you need to know are:

Headline- The title of articles

Dominant image- A picture that goes with your dominant story. It should be at least 50% larger than every other picture on the page

Jumpline- The line that tells you what page the story will be continued on

Cutline/caption- The sentence underneath a photo that explains what is happening and who is in the photo

Byline- The line telling you who the photo/graphic/story was created by

Columns/legs- How stories are laid out. A one column story will be a very skinny story, while a four column story will be wide, with four columns or legs of text.

Then we started looking at the story design step-by-step PowerPoint from TimHarrower.com.
