Today’s pre-lesson question: How would you define the term tragic hero? Provide an example of a tragic hero and explain why. (I didn’t expect you to know the term, I wanted you to take your best guess based on the two words together.) During our discussion on the question I defined the term: A tragic herois a hero (someone of a high social rank,) who has a downfall due to some problem in his or her character. This problem is known as a tragic flaw (some examples could be pride, greed, arrogance, lust, etc.) Once the tragic hero has his or her downfall they either wind up dead, or if they live they are left with nothing. In the case they are left with nothing and no one they take the news with an air of dignity in spite of their current state of ruin.

After the pre-lesson question there was a pop quiz based on the reading from yesterday. It should have been easy points for those of you who were reading during class, as you were supposed to be. (Skills did not take this quiz.)

Next we wrapped up our discussion we began yesterday about Shakespeare’s background. Following that we read the textbook definition of tragic hero.
