Today was the final day to work in the computer lab on your final project. At the end of the hour everyone had to .pdf what they had and e-mail that file to me. I will try to have those graded by Thursday.

Wednesday and Thursday we will spend some time talking about photojournalism and broadcast journalism.

The final will be the riveting journalism movie “Shattered Glass.” It is just about 90 minutes, and I will begin it during passing time the day of finals, so if you don’t get here right away you may miss the first few minutes, but that will allow us to get through the entire movie in the allotted time.

Today we started with our design terms quiz.

Afterwards I assigned partners and made sure everyone knew what they were working on. Then the partners got together and drew up a dummy design and made an outline of what content would go on their page/spread. The web designers had to submit a proposal about what content would go on their website. I need this dummy turned in from every group before we can begin work in the lab.

Today I introduced your final project, which we will begin work on this Wednesday. After introducing the final project I went over how to use the different programs, which we will be using to complete the project.

Today we began with NPR news.

Then we looked at design examples to see some great examples of what you can do to tell a story in unique ways.

With remaining time we discussed how yearbook layout differs from newspaper layout.

Study your terms next week. We’ll review Monday and take our final quiz/test. Then we will begin learning how to use the software that you’ll use to create your final project.

We began with a current events quiz.

I began today by explaining that most designers pre-plan their pages on what is called a dummy. It contains columns and inches, then the designers put their elements on the page to get an idea of how it will look prior to beginning to work on the computer.

After showing how to mark up a dummy I had everyone fill out a dummy with the items from this sheet. That assignment will be due tomorrow.

Yesterday the test took longer than I had anticipated, so today we started the design terms and design basics PowerPoint that I had hoped to begin yesterday. If you were absent you should look at the PowerPoint (the link is available in yesterday’s post,) and take notes about the terms and definitions from the presentation.
