Today was the final work day to prepare for your book talks and book reports.

Here is an example book report on Ulysses to give you an idea of what your report should look like based on what you’ve read already.

The things you want to cover in your PowerPoint are:

  • Basic info- Title, author, has it been turned into a movie, etc.
  • Plot summary- Keep this brief, you don’t want to give too much away in case someone else decides to read it.
  • Characters- List the major characters, don’t write too much info- you’ll fill that part in when you present
  • Setting- Where and when- explain if/why this is important in the book
  • Themes- What were the messages of the book?
  • Conflicts- What was the major conflict in the book? (Don’t tell us how it was resolved if that will spoil the ending.)
  • Review- Did you like the book? Why or why not? Would you recommend that we read it?

Today we started with SSR for those of you who need time in class to read your book. Those of you who were finished were allowed to quiety work on a draft of your book report.
Tomorrow I will give an example book talk and book reporter over To Kill a Mockingbird. The rest of the time this week will be spent as work time for your book talks. We will begin giving book talks next Monday.

Today in class we started by having everyone make up any missing reading checks. After what we read chapter 17 together. There is no reading assignment tonight, so I recommend that you use the extra time from the half day to read a little from your SSR book. We will begin work on the visual and report in class on February 11, so your SSR book should be finished by then.

Today we continued reading Julius Caesar. We began with scene 1. I hope to get through Act 4 by the middle of this week so we can finish Act 5 early next week, giving you all plenty of time to work on your book talks and book reports. I will provide rubrics and models for those assignments once we finish the play.

Reminders: Extra credit essay answers are/were due by 3:30 today. Continue reading your SSR books at home, those should be finished by next week so you can begin working on your visual and book report as soon as we have work time. If you miss a day in class assume that we get through at least a scene of reading and make sure that you read that on your own.
